Title: C^0 Interior Penalty Methods

Abstract

C^0 interior penalty methods are discontinuous Galerkin methods for fourth order problems that use standard Lagrange finite element spaces for second order problems. They have advantages over classical approaches such as $C^1$ finite element methods, nonconforming finite element element methods and mixed finite element methods.  In this talk we will discuss convergence, adaptivity, fast solvers and applications of the $C^0$ interior penalty methods.

 

 

Susanne C. Brenner is the Nicholson Professor at Louisiana State University. She holds a joint appointment with the Department of Mathematics and Center for Computation and Technology (CCT). At CCT she is also serving as the Associate Director for Academic Affairs since 2008. Her research interests include: numerical analysis, finite element methods, multigrid methods, domain decomposition methods.

In 2005 she was awarded a Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In 2011 she was awarded the AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture. She is a SIAM Fellow (Class of 2010), AMS Fellow (Inaugural Class 2013) and AAAS Fellow (2012).

Currently she serves as Managing Editor of Mathematics of Computation. She also serves on the editorial boards of the SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Numerische Mathematik, Numerical Algorithms, Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis and the Journal of Numerical Mathematics. She serves on the Scientific Council of the Center International de Mathematiques Pures et Appliquees (CIMPA, since 2009) and the AMS Council (since 2012). In addition, she was a member of the Electorate Nominating Committee for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (Section A) and the SIAM Fellows Selection Committee (2014-2016). She is a past SIAM Vice President for Publications and served on the SIAM Council.
