讲座内容：Changes in intercity transport costs reshape patterns of urban specialization and contribute to regional inequality. This paper explores how high-speed rail (HSR) affects regional disparity through asymmetric impacts of HSR connections on urban specialization between core and peripheral cities. Leveraging city-pair-level indicators of HSR connection and a difference-in-differences (DID) strategy with high-dimensional fixed effects, we show HSR intensifies intercity specialization. Sectoral analysis reveals that HSR widens the employment gaps in the service sector between core and peripheral cities but narrows them in manufacturing. This suggests a siphoning effect in the service sector, where large cities attract employment from smaller neighbors. The effect is pronounced among city pairs characterized by greater development gaps, geographic proximity, and divergent industrial structures. The service sector’s response is primarily driven by growth effects, whereas the manufacturing’s reflects existing employment redistribution.
