STUDYING AND TUNING NOVEL PROPERTIES OF 2D MATERIALS-物电论坛第739期

博士生中期报告内容简介:Though two dimensional (2D) materials have been studied extensively due to their intriguing physical properties and potential applications in modern technologies, it is still required to understand the principles governing the contemporary properties of these materials so that they can be used for future applications efficiently. There are many aspects which are still needed to probe in the layered materials. Here by employing density functional theory, comprehensive simulations studies were conducted on 2D materials of various layered compounds including nickel-dihalides NiX2 (X = Cl and Br), elemental arsenic (As) and indium selenide (InSe). For 2D NiCl2 and NiBr2, we mainly considered their structural, electronic and magnetic properties with and without strains. Next, electron irradiation was used to fabricate the defects and perform the structural modifications in the 2D arsenic. Finally, effect of transition metal impurities on 2D InSe  was investigated deeply for the inducement of spin properties in the non-magnetic InSe. Our studies could pave the way to establish a microscopic understanding of the interesting phenomena observed  in these novel 2D systems.
报告人简介: Mushtaq Muhammad is a PhD researcher at UESTC and doing research under the supervision of professor Xia Xiang from the school of physical electronics. His major is Physics. Before his PhD studies, He did his MS in Physics from Pakistan in the field of nanomagnetism. There, he received the gold medal award as a distinguished student and published one paper in the journal of magnetism and magnetic materials. Now the team is working on two-dimensional materials. He had published one SCI rank-2 paper in the journal of ‘Royal Society of Chemistry’. Also, He had presented one conference paper with the title of ‘Defect Production in Buckled Arsenene Under Electron Irradiation: Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Study’ in the 3rd international workshop on lasers and ion beams interactions with materials ((2017 LIBIM).
